Whistler Blackcomb Rewards Top Partners in the First Annual Partner Marketing Awards

WHISTLER, BC March 19, 2013 – Nintendo, TELUS, GORE-TEX® Products, Quiksilver and GMC were awarded top honors in Whistler Blackcomb’s Partner Marketing Awards held in December 2012. Categories included: Most Innovative Activation, Best Bang for Your Buck, Best Employee Engagement, Best Integration of Athletes and Best Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Activation.

Nintendo was recognized for the most innovative activation through the Nintendo Gaming Lounges in the Roundhouse and Rendezvous Lodges on Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. The lounges integrate the unique mountain feel and are convenient for families and individuals who are interested in taking a break from skiing and riding, and enjoy the latest games for the new Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems. “Nintendo is proud to receive this award from our friends at Whistler Blackcomb. With their support in creating the Nintendo Gaming Lounges, we’ve been able to bring yet another fun and engaging experience for Whistler Blackcomb guests. We couldn’t be happier that Nintendo is a part of that experience” said John Azevedo, Senior Manager, Consumer Marketing.

The award for Best Bang for Your Buck went to TELUS for their new complimentary WiFi hotspots around Whistler Blackcomb. This initiative was completed at a low cost with a large positive impact for all Whistler Blackcomb guests. New this season, alpine WiFi is available at several on-mountain locations including; the Inukshuk in front of the Roundhouse Lodge on Whistler Mountain, at the top of 7th Heaven Express chairlift on Blackcomb Mountain; at the top of Symphony Chair on Whistler Mountain; and at the top of the Peak Chair on Whistler Mountain. Complimentary WiFi is also available in the Roundhouse Lodge, Rendezvous Lodge, Glacier Creek, Garibaldi Lift Co., Wizard Grill, Merlin’s Bar & Grill and Dusty’s Bar & BBQ.

“TELUS is honoured to receive this recognition, not only as a B.C.-based company, but as an organization that consistently puts our customers first and actively listens to them,” said Andrea Goertz, TELUS Senior Vice President, Strategic Initiatives and Communications. “With complimentary WiFi around the mountain, visitors and residents can now access e-mail, social media and the Internet to stay connected and share their personalized Whistler Blackcomb experiences with friends and family in real time.”

GORE-TEX® Products won the Employee Engagement category thanks to their highly successful GORE-TEX® Brand Ambassador Program. Six outstanding Whistler Blackcomb employees were recognized for their efforts in promoting and encouraging guests to choose GORE-TEX® products. Each of the winners were awarded with GORE-TEX® pants, jackets, and gloves and they starred in an ad campaign featured throughout Whistler and Vancouver.

Quiksilver was recognized for Best Integration of an Athlete. During the Canadian premiere of the movie Art of Flight, starring Travis Rice, Quiksilver invited Rice to their Whistler Village store location. The high profile athlete created buzz at the store with a lineup of guests hoping to meet Rice, have their posters signed and pose for photos.

The Whistler Blackcomb Foundation also honoured GMC with an award for the Best Activation at a Whistler Blackcomb Foundation event. In September 2012, GMC hosted a Hole-In-One competition that took place during the TELUS Golf Classic at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. Participants lined up for a chance to hit a hole-in-one and win a Cadillac SUV, and indeed a player in the tournament won the vehicle! In total, a record breaking $121,000 was raised during the TELUS Golf Classic 2012 for the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation. The Foundation will distribute those funds to deserving organizations within the Sea to Sky community.

“We are thrilled with the array of unique events and programs our partners have executed at Whistler Blackcomb and the focus they have demonstrated with enhancing the guest experience. It was difficult to single out the winners and those who earned top honours were also awarded with a $500 Whistler Blackcomb gift card,” says Megan Reynolds, manager of strategic alliances and partner marketing. “The purpose of the Partner Marketing Awards is to recognize the efforts of our partners and encourage them to leverage their relationship with Whistler Blackcomb to showcase world class activations.”
