O Canada: Top 5 Canadian Athletes to Watch this Summer in Rio

With Canada Day just around the corner, we couldn’t resist taking a moment to shine a light on our top 5 picks for medal contenders at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games this summer! These athletes will give us many chances to wave the flag, and stand a little taller as proud Canadians. The countdown is on to Rio- are you ready to cheer on the home team?!

  1. Andre De Grasse

Andre De Grasse runs track for Team Canada, specializing in the 100m and 200m events.  He will look to build on his 2015 Pan Am games double gold and world championship bronze in Rio next month.

  1. Women’s Rugby

These Canadian Women have made history as the first ever Canadian rugby team to qualify for an Olympic Games.  As one of Canada’s top contenders for a gold medal, the quest begins with group games against Britain, Japan, and host Brazil.

Placing first at the 2015 FIBA Americas tournament to clinch a berth to Rio 2016, not to mention Gold at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games, puts the Women’s National team on the path to the podium this summer.

When competing on the track, Lakatos races in the middle distance and sprint events for Team Canada. With 3 silver medals in London, 4 gold and 1 silver at the 2013 World Championships, and 3 gold at the 2015 Para Pan Am Games, Lakatos is poised for another successful Games this summer in Rio.

  1. Brianne Theisen Eaton

Brianne Theisen Eaton competes in both the heptathlon and pentathlon for Canada.  Theisen Eaton eyes gold in the heptathlon in Rio next month after a silver at the 2015 World championships and a gold in the 2016 World indoor championships.
