As an expat in Vancouver the holiday period for me isn’t so much a family affair as it is for most. If I’m not using the holiday period to go back to India and see family and friends back home, my time here is spent with friends who, for the time being, call Vancouver home. One thing we all have in common is our love for delicious food, which naturally leads to a much loved ritual– POTLUCK!
Although it’s the holiday season there isn’t necessarily a particular theme to our feast. It’s normally make whatever your heart desires, but just make sure there’s enough for everyone as well left overs for the next day. In the past we’ve had a rather eclectic menu with everything from traditional turkey and ham, to curries and vindaloos, and everything in between. Two or three desserts seems to be norm with pie being a ‘must have’ item on the night.
Here’s some of my favorites from years past:
- Roast leg of ham
- Lamb Vindaloo
- Thai Shrimp Curry
- Raspberry Rhubarb Pie
- Panna Cotta
No matter the occasion, there’s nothing like over indulging in scrumptious food with close friends on a chilly winter night. The evening starts off with excitement and closes with getting comfy on the couch with a drink in hand, which is what the holidays are all about.
